Dojo Etiquette Basics

Aikido is a relatively young art form; it is derived from ancient fighting arts of Japan and is therefore steeped in tradition. Although there seem to be many forms of etiquette to remember, they will come naturally as you continue to train.

Please do not be resentful if you are corrected on a point of etiquette for each one is important for you or your partner's safety and to the overall learning experience.

If you are unsure of what to do for a particular situation, ask a senior student or simply follow your senior’s lead.

*

Please respect our training area and each other.

*

Leave shoes neatly on shoe rack.

*

Make sure feet are clean prior to stepping on the mat.
*

Sign waiver and arrange for mat fee prior to training.
*

Please wear gi (plain, white gi preferred) or comfortable loose-fitting clothing which covers your knees (leggings are not recommended).

*

If you or your training partner are injured during training, notify the instructor immediately.

*

If you are late for class, change into your gi and sit in seiza on the mat edge, until the instructor signals for you to join the class.

*

To help keep the mats clean, ALL students are expected to assist with mat clean-up after class has ended.

*

Sensei is happy to have a discussion with you, but reserve longer, in-depth questions for before or after class times.

*

For those who are concerned with contracting coronavirus, please feel free to wear your mask over your nose and mouth, wash hands regularly, do not touch your face, and use hand sanitizer as often as needed.

 *

Etiquette Guidelines for entering / training inside the dojo are posted by the door.

Masks are no longer required---please feel free to wear one if it is your preference.

Current Schedule is being updated---expect more classes to be added (or class times to change temporarily)!  Thank you for your patience during the transition!
